At May Memorial Daycare, we've chosen to use the Early Learning Matters (ELM) curriculum from Purdue University. It's a fun, flexible curriculum that focuses on all areas of human development from birth through age 5. Based on the latest child development research, ELM is about life skills, social skills, and school-readiness. The core curriculum has 8 areas of competence:
Language and Literacy Readiness
Mathematics Readiness
Self-Regulation
Social-Emotional Development
Social Studies
Creative and Artistic Expression
Scientific Exploration
Physical Health
The curriculum is flexible and offers multiple activities in each of these areas so that our teachers can customize based on their knowledge and care for the children in their classes. Because the ELM program offers instructional material for all ages under 5 years old, children will have an easy time transitioning from one class to the next.
In addition to this curriculum, the students also have weekly time with a member of May Memorial's pastoral staff. These activities range from an age-appropriate Bible lesson, to songs and stories. Our school-aged children come to the church once per week for outdoor play, fellowship, and a Bible lesson based on the Revised Common Lectionary.
We hope and effort is that the children at May Memorial Daycare are being prepared to be well-rounded students, physically and emotionally healthy people, and good neighbors!
